Celebrating its 20th anniversary season, Beth Morrison Projects (BMP) is the foremost creator and producer of new opera and music theatre, with a fierce commitment to telling the stories of our time, cultivating a new generation of talent, and collaborating with them to lead the field into a more inclusive, innovative, and relevant future.
Founded in 2006 by “contemporary opera mastermind” (LA Times) Beth Morrison, who was honored as one of Musical America’s Artists of the Year/Agents of Change, BMP now operates across the U.S. and internationally, with offices in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, and is “a driving force behind America’s thriving opera scene” (Financial Times). Opera News declared that the company, “more than any other… has helped propel the art form into the twenty-first century.”

BMP identifies emerging and established artists who experiment, innovate, and take artistic risks to evolve opera-theatre and music-theatre into the future.With a focus on the cultivation of the next generation and diversification, BMP serves as a launching pad for the future artistic leaders in the field.Through the commissioning, development, production, and touring of new works, BMP aims to expose audiences around the world to relevant contemporary American chamber opera and music-theatre works of the highest caliber.

OUR HISTORY
BMP has commissioned, developed, produced, and toured more than 65 works in 15 countries around the world, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning chamber operas Angel’s Bone (Du Yun/Royce Vavrek) and p ri s m (Ellen Reid/Roxie Perkins), and three GRAMMY™-nominated operas including Black Lodge (David T. Little/Anne Waldman), Adoration (Mary Kouyoumdjian and Royce Vavrek) and TRADE/ Mary Motorhead (Emma O’Halloran and Mark O’halloran). Its productions have been presented at prestigious venues and festivals such as Brooklyn Academy of Music, LAOpera , Edinburgh International Festival, Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Barbican, Lincoln Center, The Walker Art Center, Beijing Music Festival, New Visions Arts Festival, The Holland Festival, O. Festival Rotterdam, and more.
In 2013, BMP co-founded the PROTOTYPE Festival with HERE Arts Center in New York City, which has been called “utterly essential” (The New York Times), “indispensable” (The New Yorker), and “one of the world’s top festivals of contemporary opera and theater” (Associated Press). Beginning with the 2026 Festival, BMP assumed the role of sole curator and producer.
EXPANSION & INNOVATION
In 2015, BMP became a bi-coastal company with the opening of its Los Angeles office, establishing deep ties with the city’s vibrant arts community. A foundational partnership with LA Opera began that same year and continues to thrive today. Together, the two organizations have brought seventeen of BMP’s groundbreaking opera-theatre productions to Los Angeles audiences, redefining the city’s operatic landscape. BMP’s work has also been presented in collaboration with the LA Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, The Broad Stage, Center Theatre Group, and others. As a leader in the Los Angeles opera scene, BMP is a driving force behind OperaFest LA, a biennial collaborative festival that unites multiple organizations across the city to present innovative works in opera.
FOSTERING THE FUTURE
BMP is committed to fostering the next generation of creatives through its inclusive and industry-shaping programs Producer Academy and BMP: NEXTGEN.
BMP: Producer Academy is an 8-week course that supports early-career producers by providing mentorship, networking, and personal growth opportunities. It has served more than 1,000 students from 19 countries, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds and abilities to receive high-quality training without financial barriers.
BMP: NEXTGEN invites emerging composers to submit vocal works to a panel of music industry professionals for the chance to have their work commissioned for a world premiere production in New York and Los Angeles.
